More and more non-country artists keep trying their hand at country music.  This includes rappers getting into the fray. BigXthaPlug (Xavier Landum) already dipped his toes in the genre with his single, “All The Way” featuring Bailey Zimmerman.  Once more, he embraces country, well, country-rap on “Home”. This time, his partner in crime is Shaboozey (Collins Obinna Chibueze), who dominated country music in 2024 thanks to his dominant, Grammy-nominated hit, “Tipsy (A Bar Song)”. The results on “Home” are mixed, at best.

The unapologetic, country-western backdrop is shocking, at least when you consider this song is credited to BigXthaPlug as the lead artist. Nonetheless, it is Shaboozey who dominates early on, singing the first verse and chorus.  Expectedly, this sounds more like a Shaboozey song, or an artist who is a full-time, dedicated country musician. Shaboozey sings well and owns the crème de la crème of “Home,” the chorus:

“Highway, highway

Oh, won’t you take me home for a minute?

I swear it won’t be long

Highway, highway

Oh, won’t you take me home for a minute?

It’s lonely on this road.”

After ample Shaboozey, BigXthaPlug enters the mix. “I’ve been lost on this highway, tryna figure out life on this road / Shit, I lost all the love that I had in my soul.” He gets more of a hip-hop-centric backdrop.  However, it is still odd to hear banjo plucking and steel guitar against a hip-hop beat… just saying. BigXthaPlug’s cadence and flow are compelling and true to his style. “Filled up my tank with the thoughts of your image / On the road, tryna race to you, dodgin’ these tickets,” he raps in the third verse, continuing, “For kisses, just hopin’ to fulfill your wishes / I’ll listen, I’m on the road back to your city, ayy.” Ayy! Still, it feels uncharacteristic.  Is “Home” bad? No, but I’m not sure this particular country-rap song is my cup of tea. Some will dig this one more than others.
