It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 27th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2025), we dive into “Pop, Lock & Drop It”, the one-hit wonder by Huey.

“Toot that thang up, mami make it roll / Once you pop, pop lock it for me, girl, get low.” Woo!  Huey (Lawrence Franks Jr., 1987 – 2020) was renowned for one song and one song only: “Pop, Lock & Drop It”, released in 2006. Tragically, the St. Louis rapper was shot and killed in 2020 at 32 years old 😢. In the chorus of his hit, which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, the rapper continues, memorably, “If yo mama gave it to you, baby girl, let it show / Once you pop lock, drop it for me, maybe we can roll, OH!” Word. “Pop, Lock & Drop It,” the fourth track from his 2007 album, Notebook Paper, was his only charting song on the pop charts.  Notably, it was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of AmericaDeAndre “Popo” Smith produced the slick, malicious-sounding, minor-key banger. The beat and the synths kick ass!

The chorus is lit, but equally lit is the post-chorus.  Here, the women, whom Huey gasses up, enthusiastically assert, “Pop, lock, and drop it” eight times. Emphasis, peeps, emphasis! The chorus and pre-chorus, alongside that menacing musical accompaniment, are the biggest selling points of this 2000s bop. But, Huey also brings the heat over a pair of verses and a bridge.  “Look yo’ color carmello (Caramello?) brown, and your skin so smooth / I’m havin’ fantasies about what you and me can do,” he spits in the first verse, hornily adding in the second, “From da window to da wall, lil mama showin’ her thong / The broad, freakin’ herself, it’s tellin’ me that it’s on /…I’m thinkin’ if I can handle it the way you make it roll.” “Pop, Lock & Drop It” isn’t a deep or transcendent song, but it was and still is F-U-N, fun! R.I.P., Huey.
