Welcome to Music Lifts 🎶 🏋, a column highlighting songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs exuding fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 22nd  edition of Music Lifts 🎶 🏋 (2025), we highlight “Let Go” as performed by DeWayne Woods.

He prayed to Him – G-O-D! “Then He said you don’t have to cry / ‘Cause I’ll supply all your needs.” Amen 🙏! Hallelujah 🙌!  Those inspiring, uplifting lyrics hail from “Let Go”, the second track from Woods’ 2006 debut album, Introducing DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet. Grammy-winning singer/songwriter PJ Morton wrote and produced this contemporary gospel gem. Nearly 20 years later, “Let Go” is performed frequently by my church choir, speaking to the enduring and meaningful nature.

“Let Go” is radiant. It is ear-catching thanks to a great arrangement and production (piano, organ, bass, drums, choir). Woods excels with his smooth, reverent lead vocals.  The songwriting is celestial with its thoughtful, spiritually driven lyricism.  The centerpiece is the chorus, where fabulous, harmonized background vocals support Woods’ dynamic lead.  He, meanwhile, amps up the ad-libs.  Ultimately, he digs in more during the second chorus:

“As soon as I stop worrying (Soon as I stop worrying)

Worrying how the story ends (When I let go)

I let go (And I let) and I let God

… Let God have His way

(That’s when things) That’s when things start happening

I’ll stop looking at back then

I let go and I’ll let God have His way.”

With another top-notch verse (“I have to know if I’m to put it in His hands / That everything will be alright”), the bridge is electrifying, too (“Let go, and let God”). After Woods sings the bridge solo, the choir enters the mix, in dynamite fashion, and Woods ad-libs/riffs.  If you need a pick-me-up and some serious encouragement, look no further than “Let Go”.  DeWayne Woods puts his foot into this one 🙌!
