Universal Parks & Resorts will build a family-friendly theme park in Frisco, one of the Lone Star State's fastest-growing cities. The new park concept will cater to families with small children.

The proposed park will have an adjacent themed hotel, and there will be room for an expansion on the 97-acre plot that Universal recently purchased for the project. The project, which will be much smaller than Universal's existing parks, will also have a very different look and feel from the other properties, executives said.

The company said it chose the North Texas city because it is a dynamic and growing area. No opening date has been announced for the park.

“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the city of Frisco and Mayor Cheney as we work to bring this innovative, new concept to life, designed specifically for a younger generation of Universal fans,” said Page Thompson, president of new ventures for Universal Parks & Resorts.

Several big projects have opened in Frisco within the past 10 years, and in May the city will welcome the Omni PGA Frisco Resort near the new headquarters of the PGA of America. The 500-room resort will feature two 18-hole championship golf courses, a 10-hole short course, several dining and retail concepts, 10 four-bedroom ranch houses, four pools, a full-service Mokara Spa, a Lounge by Topgolf, and more than 127,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space.

The 91-acre campus of the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters, called the Star, is also in Frisco, along with Major League Soccer's Toyota Stadium, home of FC Dallas, and the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
