The 225-room Asher Adams, an Autograph Collection hotel from Marriott, has debuted in Salt Lake City. The new Utah property is a reimagining of the 1908 Union Pacific Depot.
Named for John R. Asher and George H. Adams, the first cartographers to draw railroad routes, the hotel features views of downtown and the Wasatch Mountain Range, and is within walking distance of the Salt Palace Convention Center and the city's main attractions.
“This highly anticipated property offers elevated dining concepts and best-in-class service, along with a stunning reintroduction of the beloved Union Pacific Depot building,” said general manager Niels Vuijsters. "The intentional adaptive reuse project marries original elements with modern fixtures seamlessly.”
Saving history
Embracing the building’s history, the Athens Group, a luxury hospitality development company, and Hatteras Sky, a commercial real estate and hospitality development firm, have transformed the former station, bringing to life an elevated, modern experience that is an ode to the bygone era of American railroads.
The depot’s French Second Empire architecture remains, but now sports a sophisticated interior and embraces the building’s place on the National Registry of Historic Places. Décor elements include restored stained-glass windows, terrazzo floors, vintage Utah-inspired artwork and oil-on-canvas murals.
Railroad touches in the guest rooms
Curated train-travel elements have been added alongside modern amenities. The 13 suites, many with 16-foot ceilings, mix exposed brick and picture-frame wall molding, large soaking tubs and bright subway tiles. Additional suites and accommodation types also offer a modern-meets-historic design using the buildings’ original dormers and preserved round windows.
All aboard for events
About 10,000 square feet of function space and an additional 10,000 square feet of versatile venues for social events are available for groups. The property provides access to team-building events and nearby entertainment, and the meeting space features floor-to-ceiling windows in rooms named for train engines and railroad terms.
Restaurants nod to the dining car
The Asher Adams offers several culinary concepts. Rouser serves upscale American fare in an open kitchen, and features tableside elements on select dishes and cocktails. Inspired by coal-fueled train engines, the kitchen’s Josper grill, oven and rotisserie cooks with charcoal.
No. 119 is a whisky bar on the second floor overlooking the Grand Hall. On the way to the bar, guests can set the soundtrack for their experience with the Gandy Dancer's curated selection of 2,500 records sourced by a professional music designer.
The Bar at Asher Adams hosts both private and public events, such as tastings. Coffee, pastries and light bites are available from the club-car inspired Counterpart.
