A short drive from San Diego, this small beach town in California has something for everyone, from the avid surfer to the history buff. Spending an extra day here is ample time to see the sights.

Foot Traffic

While this city is small, it is rife with history, and there's no better way to learn its secrets than by exploring its streets on foot — especially with a knowledgeable tour guide by your side. Put on comfortable shoes, step back in time and find out all about this beach town on a walking tour with the Coronado Historical Association. Stops include the famous Hotel del Coronado (above) and multimillion-dollar beachfront homes.

Island Vibes

The-Islander-Restaurant-Coronado

Inspired by the surf culture of the '60s and '70s, The Islander restaurant recently opened near Coronado Beach. On the menu are delights such as Hawaiian ceviche, fried chicken tacos and Kahlúa pork sliders, as well as tiki-inspired cocktails. Brunch is served on weekends, making it the perfect spot for a big breakfast after a morning of riding the waves.

Beach Brews

Coronado-Brewing-Company

Founded in 1996, Coronado Brewing Company's craft beers, such as the Island-Style IPA, are on tap at this original location, along with seasonal suds, ciders and seltzers. The award-winning brews are now distributed from coast to coast, but nothing beats a visit to home base.

Bookish

Bay-Books-Coronado

If you need a good beach read, stop by Bay Books. A military section celebrates the North Island Naval Air Station and the café allows you to cozy up and read on the rare rainy days.

O Sole Mio

Gondola-Company-Coronado

Be transported from San Diego Bay to the canals of Venice on a gondola ride through the Coronado cays. The 50-minute cruise can be taken during the day, at sunset or even at night. For a little extra, hire a violinist or mandolin player to set the mood.
