15 Captivating, Hypothetical If Songs (2025) [๐Ÿ“ท: Brent Faulkner / The Musical Hype; AcatXlo fromย Pixabay]15 Captivating, Hypothetical If Songs features songs by Alicia Keys, Artemas, Bobby Womack, Britney Spears, Patti LaBelle, and Yeat.ย

According to the gospel of Britney Spears, โ€œLove me, hate me, say what you want about me / But all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to, If U Seek Amy. Word.ย  Openly gay pop artist JORDY also had a sexual perspective involving the word IF: Donโ€™t cancel all your plans / Just for some shitty headย / โ€˜Causะต youโ€™ll be just as lonely laterย / If heโ€™s in your bed. As for Patti LaBelle, โ€œIf only you knew / How much I doย / Do love you.โ€ All three songs appear on 15 Captivating, Hypothetical If Songs, the long-awaited sequel to 13 Songs Where Itโ€™s a Matter of IF (2019). 15 Captivating, Hypothetical If Songs features songs by Alicia Keys, Artemas, Bobby Womack, Britney Spears, Patti LaBelle, and Yeat. So, without further ado, letโ€™s get hypothetical with these captivating IF songs! There is nothing iffy about these tunes, Chris Brown!

1. Yeat, โ€œIf We Being Rรซalโ€

2093 // Field Trip Recordings / Capitol // 2024

Yeat, 2093 [๐Ÿ“ท: Field Trip Recordings / Capitol]โ€œI had to let a little off, yeah / I had to cut the pill off, yeah,โ€ Yeat raps in the sole verse of โ€œIf We Being Rรซalโ€. โ€œRรซalโ€ is the ย 21st track from his 2024 album, 2093.ย  It was produced by Synthetic, Radiate, Perdu, Fendii, LRBG, and Dreamr. He continues, rapping, โ€œBut if we beinโ€™ real though, yeah / Nah, I donโ€™t never feel nothinโ€™.โ€ Before Yeat raps one bar, โ€œRรซalโ€ commences with an ear-catching, dramatic, enigmatic instrumental intro. Eventually, hard-hitting anchoring drums enter the mix, as does Yeat. His vocals are syrupy while his bars are rhythmic โ€“ a strong cadence and flow. Although commanding, Yeat never gets too high or too low.ย  There are some memorable moments, including, โ€œI take the money to another level / I take the plane to another level / I take the heights to a newer level / I take gettingโ€™ high to a newer level.โ€™ Hmm, maybe he does get โ€˜too high.โ€™ Ultimately, โ€œIf We Being Rรซalโ€ is an intriguing cut from Yeat.

2. Britney Spears, โ€œIf U Seek Amyโ€

Circus // Zomba // 2008ย ย

Britney Spears, Circus [๐Ÿ“ท: Zomba]โ€œLove me, hate me, say what you want about me / But all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to, if you seek Amy.โ€ Those lyrics made โ€œIf U Seek Amyโ€, a gem from the 2008 Britney Spears album, Circus, controversial. Specifically, itโ€™s the titular lyric, which isnโ€™t what it seems, that is the culprit.ย  IF is equivalent to the letter โ€˜F,โ€™ while U (or โ€œyouโ€) is just what it is โ€“ the letter โ€˜U.โ€™ SEEK should be split; hence, โ€œSeeโ€ is equivalent to the letter โ€˜C.โ€™ย  That leaves a K, which is combined with the long โ€œAโ€ of โ€œAmy,โ€ hence, sounds like the letter, โ€˜K.โ€™ Last, but not least, the โ€˜myโ€™ in โ€œAmyโ€ is equivalent to the pronoun โ€œMe.โ€ย  Put it all together and โ€œIf U Seek Amyโ€ is really the phrase โ€œF-U-C-K Me.โ€ย ย

This makes perfect sense, given how Britney Spears characterizes Amy.ย  Everyone wants a piece of her/be her/be with her.ย  Sexually speaking, โ€œIf U Seek Amyโ€ isnโ€™t that sexual.ย ย  โ€œIf U Seek Amyโ€ faced pushback because of the double meaning.ย  Notably, Slate points out that the pun isnโ€™t original but firmly planted in the past.ย  From my perspective, had โ€œIf U Seek Amyโ€ came out just years later, it wouldnโ€™t have created the same stir.ย ย ย

3. Chris Brown, โ€œIffyโ€

Breezy // Chris Brown Entertainment LLC / RCA // 2022ย

Chris Brown, Breezy [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œBottle after bottle, now she tipsy / Canโ€™t trust these hoes โ€˜cause they iffy.โ€ Onย  โ€œIffyโ€, the 24th track from Breezy, Grammy-winning R&B artist Chris Brown keeps things shallow. Despite the fact he does not โ€˜evolve,โ€™ there are pros.ย  We get banging production by OG Parker, Smash David, and Blaq Tuxedo.ย There are lots of songwriters on this record, which is not particularly deep: โ€œIโ€™m โ€˜bout to pull up in that motherfuckinโ€™ Bentley truck / Got some bad bitches and they โ€˜bout to fuck it up.โ€ย  Word. To Brownโ€™s credit, sampling the 50 Cent aughts classic, โ€œIn Da Clubโ€ accounts for a few of those credits.ย  The thing is, even as Brown exudes ample personality, confidence, and a heaping dose of swagger, the substance and โ€˜transcendenceโ€™ factor is โ€œiffy.โ€ย  Still, this profane joint has an interesting melody, rhythmic and agile like melodic rap, and the pre-chorus and chorus are catchy. Give Brown credit for the contrast during the bridge section โ€“ a welcome change of pace. โ€œIffyโ€ bangs, but itโ€™s not starkly different from previous songs from R&Bโ€™s bad boy.ย ย ย

4. Smokey Robinson, โ€œIf We Donโ€™t Have Each Otherโ€

Gasms // Smokey Robinson // 2023

Smokey Robinson, Gasms [๐Ÿ“ท: Smokey Robinson]โ€œWake up in the morninโ€™ / And there’s love layinโ€™ there / Take up where we left off / Feel like stayinโ€™ there.โ€ Oh, snap! Itโ€™s not often that musicians in their eighties release new albums.ย Smokey Robinson is โ€˜built different.โ€™ย After an extended hiatus, the legendary 83-year-old Motown musician brought the Gasms on his 2023 album ๐Ÿคญ.ย  Robinson made it clear that a โ€œโ€˜gasmโ€™ is any good feeling you might haveโ€.ย  On promo single โ€œIf We Donโ€™t Have Each Otherโ€, the wheel isnโ€™t reinvented, but Robinson proves he can still S-A-N-G.ย Amazingly, Robinsonโ€™s smooth tenor remains potent.ย  Arguably, itโ€™s not quite as dynamic as it was in his heyday, but still, the man sounds amazing.ย  The song itself is enjoyable โ€“ a respectable, adult contemporary R&B joint.ย  The production is modest and simple but sufficient by all means.ย  Thematically, matters of the heart always equate to a win, so the dedication of which Robinson sings about is highly successful. Without each other, they have nothing โ€“ PERIOD.ย

โ€œTell me, what do we have

If we don’t have each other?

We don’t have anything

If we don’t have each other.โ€ย

ย โ€œIf We Donโ€™t Have Each Otherโ€ is a solid comeback by Robinson.ย  It reminds us how special he is as a singer, songwriter, and producer. This old-school-styled contemporary R&B joint is refreshing.ย ย

5. Alicia Keys, โ€œIf I Ainโ€™t Got Youโ€

The Diary of Alicia Keys // RCA // 2003ย

Alicia Keys, The Diary of Alicia Keys [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]Alicia Keys was โ€˜that girlโ€™ back in the 2000s.ย  Her best albums were Songs in A Minor (2001) and her sophomore album, The Diary of Alicia Keys (2003).ย  The Diary of Alicia Keys is where one of the best songs of her musical catalogue hails: โ€œIf I Ainโ€™t Got Youโ€. Keys is singing to her lover in this neo-soul classic.ย  The only thing that she wants is him โ€“ her boo.ย  This is best exemplified in the chorus, one of the most timeless of the aughts from my perspective:ย ย

โ€œSome people want it allย

But I donโ€™tโ€™ want nothing at allย

If it ainโ€™t you, babyย

If I ainโ€™t got you babyย

Some people want diamond ringsย

Some just want everythingย

But everything means nothingย

If I ainโ€™t got you, yeah.โ€ย

Further making โ€œIf I Ainโ€™t Got Youโ€ the bop that it is โ€“ the music and the production work.ย She delivers a passionate, soulful vocal, while the piano accompaniment is simply perfect. As a pianist, those arpeggiated lines are fun to play and lovely to the ears.ย  Beyond the piano, thereโ€™s additional ear candy:ย  a relatively simple drum groove, bass, smooth electric guitar, horns… Yeah, this just screams love and matrimony!ย ย

6. Luther Ingram, โ€œ(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Donโ€™t Want to Be Rightโ€

Absolutely the Best of Luther Ingram // Airline // 2010โ€ฏย

Luther Ingram, Absolutely the Best of Luther Ingram [๐Ÿ“ท: Airline]โ€œIf loving you is wrong I donโ€™t wanna be right / If being right means being without you / Iโ€™d rather live a wrong, doing life.โ€ Love will make you do crazy things, including things you know arenโ€™t right.โ€ฏ In the case of the soul classic, โ€œ(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Donโ€™t Want to Be Rightโ€, Luther Ingram commits infidelity ๐Ÿ˜ˆ. Well, if youโ€™re going to be unfaithful, at least do it with a soul classic that topped the pop charts, right (no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100)?โ€ฏโ€ฏโ€ฏย

โ€œYour friends tell you itโ€™s no futureโ€ฏย

In loving a married manโ€ฏย

If I canโ€™t see you when I want toโ€ฏย

Iโ€™ll see you when I can.โ€โ€ฏย โ€ฏย

โ€ฏโ€ฏ

Luther was dead wrong, but he perfectly captures how affairs work.โ€ฏ The guilty parties have to sneak around, which should signal how criminal what theyโ€™re doing is.โ€ฏ Ingram questions his behavior throughout โ€œ(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Donโ€™t Want to Be Right,โ€ but finds it hard to give up his โ€˜side piece,โ€™ despite โ€œKnowing I got a wife and two little children / Depending on me too.โ€ You dog! Besides the expressive lead vocals and scandalous yet pitch-perfect lyrics, the music is epic.โ€ฏ That signature guitar line, those horns โ€“ the ripe soulful aesthetic! A surefire vibe! More than 50 years after its release, โ€œ(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Donโ€™t Want to Be Rightโ€ remains fresh, relevant, and timeless.โ€ฏ One of soul musicโ€™s crown jewels. As expected, many have covered this classic. The question is, has anybody outperformed the original version?โ€ฏโ€ฏย

7. JORDY, โ€œIf Heโ€™s in Your Bedโ€

Mind Games // 300 Entertainment // 2021ย

JORDY, Mind Games [๐Ÿ“ท: 300 Entertainment]โ€œWaitinโ€™ up for someone / That I wouldnโ€™t introduce to my friendsโ€ฆโ€ Well, JORDY, dear, thatโ€™s how you know that this boy isnโ€™t worth it.ย  Perhaps he looks phenomenal in the buff, and the rocket launch is something fierce, but ultimately, ITโ€™S NOT WORTH IT.ย  That said, the pop musician is young, and lust can be hard to overcome without action, but he wouldnโ€™t be singing about it on โ€œIf Heโ€™s in Your Bedโ€ (Mind Games) if he didnโ€™t already know itโ€™s a BAD IDEA.ย

โ€œI said that in June Iโ€™d find love by December / Shitโ€™s still not together, damn…โ€ JORDY has lots to sort through on โ€œIf Heโ€™s in Your Bed.โ€ He knows โ€œthese boys ainโ€™t shit.โ€ย  Regardless, heโ€™s been in the position where having sex is just a thing to DO even though โ€œI know youโ€™re not as good as my ex.โ€ย  Furthermore, heโ€™s kissed boys that arenโ€™t โ€˜take home to momโ€™ material, not to mention that itโ€™s nothing more than a physical happening.ย  Give him credit, though โ€“ heโ€™s becoming self-aware โ€“ illustrated masterfully on the chorus:ย ย ย

โ€œStop makinโ€™ messes just to hide your messesย

You know itโ€™s trueย

Donโ€™t send that message โ€˜cause youโ€™re boredย

With nothinโ€™ bettะตr to doย

Donโ€™t cancel all your plansย

Just for some shitty headย

โ€˜Causะต youโ€™ll be just as lonely laterย

If heโ€™s in your bed.โ€ย ย

JORDY arrives at the correct realizations on โ€œIf Heโ€™s in Your Bedโ€. The fun isnโ€™t so fun in the big picture.ย  โ€˜Funโ€™ canโ€™t atone for an ex, ultimately, nor does it make headway to achieve a legit, substantial love.ย  That love, that the pop star aspires to, transcends that โ€œshitty headโ€ he sings about on the chorus.ย  Shout out to the vocals, songwriting (JORDY, Riley Biederer, and Jonny Shorr), and production (Shorr).ย ย ย

8. BROCKHAMPTON, โ€œIf You Pray Rightโ€

GINGER // ย Question Everything / RCA // 2019ย

BROCKHAMPTON, GINGER [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œIf You Pray Rightโ€, a highlight from GINGER, the fifth studio by now defunct boy band, BROCKHAMPTON, commences with a bang thanks to its unique, quirky production work, including โ€˜extraterrestrialโ€™ synths.ย  The record samples the Three 6 Mafia joint, โ€œBreak Da Law โ€˜95โ€™โ€ from their 1995 album, Mystic Stylez.ย  Yeah, the production kicks total ass. Dom McLennon raps the first verse over brassy synths, exhibiting his unique flow, including referencing religion (โ€œHallelujah, holy lion, word to Judasโ€). Kevin Abstract follows, rapping the chorus. He references his sexuality, though not as explicitly as usual (โ€œHiding at my partner houseโ€ฆโ€).ย  He follows up with the post-chorus, which uniquely uses pitch-shifted vocals. Matt Champion spits the brief second verse, with Merlyn Wood segueing with the third, with great contrast between the two rapperโ€™s voices. Joba drops the fourth, with some layered pitch-shifted vocals, keeping things interesting (โ€œAt the door, bruh, Jehovah, you ho bitch / Witness sadistic shit, well, come againโ€). There is an instrumental break before the bridge section, lifting off the sample (โ€œBreak the law, break the lawโ€ฆโ€), while Abstract performs the outro, a complete shift from everything else that precedes. โ€˜Trippyโ€™ would be a great way to describe it.ย  โ€œIf You Pray Rightโ€ is nothing short of compelling to the nth degree.ย ย

9. The 1975, โ€œIf Youโ€™re Too Shy (Let Me Know)โ€

Notes on a Conditional Formโ€ฏ// Interscope // 2020ย

The 1975, Notes on a Conditional Form [๐Ÿ“ท: Interscope]โ€œIf Youโ€™re Too Shy (Let Me Know)โ€ marked the seventh single thatโ€ฏTheโ€ฏ1975โ€ฏreleased before their gargantuan album,โ€ฏ Notes on a Conditional Form. โ€ฏโ€œIf Youโ€™re Too Shy (Let Me Know)โ€ feels like โ€˜lucky number sevenโ€™ โ€“ itโ€™s accomplished in just about every facet. Instrumentally, it serves up decadent ear candy, styled in the 80s vain with its horns and keys complementing the guitars. One of the brightest spots musically comes by way of an electrifying saxophone solo. Vocally,โ€ฏ Matthew Healyโ€ฏis compelling, particularly given the subject matter: online dating. โ€œI see her online, all the time / Iโ€™m trying not to stare down there.โ€ Hmm, maybe itโ€™s sketchier than online dating. Regardless, Healy is particularly intrigued by her looks and the sexual potential more than an emotional connection. โ€ฏIn the second verse, he freakily adds, โ€œIโ€™ve been wearing nothing every time I call you / And Iโ€™m starting to feel weird about itโ€ฆโ€ Of course, the chorus is the crowning achievement:ย ย โ€ฏย

โ€œโ€˜Maybe I would like you better if you took off your clothesย

Iโ€™m not playing with you baby; I think that you should give it a goโ€™ย

She said, โ€˜Maybe I would like you better if you took off your clothesย

I wanna see and stop thinking if youโ€™re too shy then let me โ€“ย

Too shy then let me know.โ€™โ€โ€ฏย

Wow. โ€ฏโ€œIf Youโ€™re Too Shy (Let Me Know)โ€ is a fun, memorable cut โ€“ quite the bop thanks to its sound, energetic vocals, and theme & lyrics.ย

10. Artemas, โ€œif u think iโ€™m prettyโ€

pretty // Artemas // 2024

Artemas, pretty [๐Ÿ“ท: Artemas]โ€œIf you think Iโ€™m pretty, lay our hands on me / Know you canโ€™t stop thinkinโ€™ โ€˜bout it,โ€ English singer/songwriter Artemas sings on โ€œif u think Iโ€™m prettyโ€, the brief opener from his 2024 album, pretty. He produced the brief cut alongside Daintree.ย  โ€œIfโ€ฆโ€ boasts sleek production work anchored by a heavy-hitting beat and dark synths.ย  Fittingly, the song is set in a minor key. As always, Artemasโ€™ vocals are intriguing.ย  They are effects heavy, finding the alternative pop musician showing off higher pitched (pre-chorus and chorus) and middle register (verse) moments. In both instances, the melodies are tuneful.ย  Lyrically, Artemas โ€˜keeps it realโ€™ โ€“ he does not sugarcoat the prettiness! In the chorus, excerpted above, he continues honestly, โ€œI know that youโ€™re shitty and youโ€™re bad for me / But I can’t stop thinkinโ€™ โ€˜bout it.โ€ ย โ€œWonโ€™t you give that shit a rest? / Said you needed love, but youโ€™re only here for sex, and,โ€ he sings in the verse, continuing, โ€œAnd Iโ€™m dyinโ€™ to be next / Kille me once before, I just come back more obsessed with you.โ€ Word.

11. Luther Vandross, โ€œIf I Didnโ€™t Know Betterโ€

Dance with My Father // Sony Music Entertainment // 2003

Luther Vandross, Dance With My Father [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony Music Entertainment]Dance with My Father is a significant album in the Luther Vandross discography.ย  It was the late Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriterโ€™s 13th and final studio album.ย  Before the album was released in 2003, Vandross suffered a severe stroke. In 2005, he passed away, at age 54 from complications of a stroke.ย  Dance with My Father begins with a super-smooth, adult contemporary R&B bop, โ€œIf I Didnโ€™t Know Betterโ€ penned by Vandross, Reed Vertelney, and Ezekiel Lewis.ย  Vandross produced it.ย  โ€œIf I Didnโ€™t Know Betterโ€ finds Luther Vandross at his best.ย  His vocals are silky smooth โ€“ simply angelic.ย  As he sings, it never sounds like Vandross breaks a sweat. The production is firmly planted in a grown folksโ€™ brand of R&B but doesnโ€™t sound out of touch with the contemporary R&B of the aughts either. In โ€œIf I Didnโ€™t Know Better,โ€ the girl, Lutherโ€™s friend, has a man. However, Vandross believes their friendship is more.ย  โ€œI see the things that your man canโ€™t see,โ€ he sings in the first verse, adding, โ€œAnd who is there for you and love you like no otherย  / Then you kiss and tell me that you love me like a brother.โ€ย  In the second verse, he admits his โ€˜readโ€™ on the situation could be incorrect, but โ€œI donโ€™t rub up on my friends that way.โ€ Ooh-wee! Besides his brilliant vocals, Luther is supported by sweet background vocals. The chorus is the centerpiece with Vandross expanding on their โ€˜relationshipโ€™:

โ€œIf I didnโ€™t know better

Iโ€™d think that you were mine, youโ€™re with me all the time

If I didnโ€™t know better

Iโ€™d swear weโ€™re more than friends, youโ€™re touching me again

If I didnโ€™t know better

Iโ€™d think we were in love

Girl, do you wanna tell me something?

Oh, oh, oh.โ€ย

โ€œIf I Didnโ€™t Know Betterโ€ is a fine non-single from Dance with My Father that deserves its flowers.

12. Patti LaBelle, โ€œIf Only You Knewโ€

Iโ€™m In Love Again // Philadelphia International / Sony BMG // 1983ย

Patti LaBelle, Iโ€™m In Love Again [๐Ÿ“ท: Philadelphia International / Sony BMG]โ€œI must have rehearsed my lines / A thousand times / Until I had them memorized.โ€ Ah, those famous opening lyrics hail from Patti LaBelle, specifically, one of her biggest, most renowned hits, โ€œIf Only You Knewโ€. โ€œIf Only You Knewโ€ appears on her 1983, gold-certified album, Iโ€™m In Love Again.ย  This ultra-smooth soul cut, amazingly, was merely a moderate hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at no. 46 โ€“ #TRAVESTY!ย  Of course, โ€œIf Only You Knewโ€ performed better on the R&B charts.ย ย

ย

So, why was Patti LaBelle rehearsing lines? Well, she needed to tell him her true feelings.ย  It took her a while to โ€œget up the nerve / To tell you the words.โ€ Those words are, of course, finding LaBelle revealing her love.ย  The classic chorus says it best:ย ย

โ€œIf only you knewย

How much I doย

Do love youย

If only you knowย

How much I doย

I do need you.โ€ย

Of course, LaBelle sings brilliantly, showing poise early on and โ€˜letting her ripโ€™ as the record progresses. โ€œIf Only You Knewโ€ was tailor-made for LaBelle.ย  Penned by the talented team of Cynthia Biggs, Dexter Wansel, and Kenneth Gamble, itโ€™s incredibly well written.ย  LaBelle takes this love-driven gem and runs with it.ย ย ย

13. Shai, โ€œIf I Ever Fall in Loveโ€

If I Ever Fall in Love // Gasoline Alley // 1992ย ย

Shai, If I Ever Fall in Love [๐Ÿ“ท: Gasoline Alley]Sometimes, success comes early for a musical group.ย  For contemporary R&B collective Shai โ€“ Carl Martin, Darnell Van Rensalier, Garfield Bright, Marc Gay โ€“ their first single, โ€œIf I Ever Fall in Loveโ€, was gargantuan. The a cappella gem was their biggest hit, reaching no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.ย  Beyond its chart peak, โ€œIf I Ever Fall in Loveโ€ was certified platinum by the RIAA. Furthermore, their debut album, If I Ever Fall in Love, was certified double platinum.ย  Martin wrote and produced the 90s classic.ย ย If I Fall in Love features two versions of the song.ย  The best version is the original, a cappella version โ€“ the sixth track.ย  The voices of Shai mesh together seamlessly.ย  Shai are connected, expressive, and playful. Thematically, love and matters of the heart never grow old.ย  The collective touts the importance of friendship and an emotional connection regarding love. โ€œBut I was caught up in physical attraction,โ€ they assert in the first verse, adding, โ€œBut to my satisfaction / Baby, you were more than just a face.โ€ Phew ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ! Lust is not equivalent to love! In the second verse, โ€œThe very next time sheโ€™ll be my friend.โ€ They add, โ€œI just wanna be the one to serve you / Sometimes, I feel as if I donโ€™t deserve you / I cherish every moment with you.โ€ Oh, the dedication! Of course, the centerpiece โ€“ the section to beat โ€“ is the chorus:ย ย ย

โ€œAnd if I ever (ever fall)ย

In love again (again)ย

I will be sure that the lady is a friendย

And if I ever (ever fall)ย ย

In love so true (so true)ย

I will be sure that the ladyโ€™s just like you.โ€ย ย

Prudent words.ย  More than 30 years later, โ€œIf I Ever Fall in Loveโ€ remains the sugar honey iced tea.

14. Bobby Womack, โ€œIf You Think Youโ€™re Lonely Nowโ€

The Poet // ABKCO Music & Records, Inc. // 1981ย

Bobby Womack, The Poet [๐Ÿ“ท: ABKCO Music & Records, Inc.]โ€œIf you think youโ€™re lonely now, huh / Wait until tonight, girl.โ€ Why Bobby Womack? โ€œIโ€™ll be long gone / โ€ฆAnd youโ€™ll never find another man thatโ€™ll treat you right.โ€ Noted โ€“ loud and clear.ย  The late, great soul musician dropped a gem in the early 80s with โ€œIf You Think Youโ€™re Lonely Nowโ€.ย  The seventh track from his 1981 LP, The Poet, was a hit on the R&B charts.ย ย  However, sadly, it didnโ€™t impact the pop charts.ย  Nonetheless, the Womack, Patrick Moten, and Sandra Sully penned track is one of the gems of Bobbyโ€™s awesome musical catalog. First and foremost, Womack โ€˜brings the heatโ€™ vocally.ย  He has the perfect topic to sing about: love.ย  Both lyrics and melodies are memorable.ย  The songwriting is relatable, given that โ€˜matters of the heartโ€™ are universal.ย  Womack feels unloved by a woman he characterizes as โ€˜high maintenanceโ€™: โ€œSheโ€™s always complaining โ€˜bout me never being at home / But when Iโ€™m home, Iโ€™m broke / Sheโ€™s telling me โ€˜bout the things that her girlfriendโ€™s got / What she ainโ€™t got.โ€ย  In the second and third verses, there are elements of karma.ย  โ€œWhen I ainโ€™t there to rub your back /โ€ฆ Just remember I made it a known fact,โ€ he sings in the second, adding in the third, โ€œGirl, ainโ€™t it funny how the tables turn? / When things arenโ€™t going your way.โ€ By the fifth verse, heโ€™s completely done with her shenanigans: โ€œโ€˜Cause Iโ€™ve done my time / And itโ€™s your turn now (Wait until tonight, girl).โ€ Womack also gets a lift from fantastic background vocals that sing titular lyrics and the recurrent, โ€œWait until tonight, girl.โ€ Aside from sweet, nuanced vocals and unforgettable lyrics, the musical accompaniment is swell. Ultimately, Womack shines on this โ€˜late-careerโ€™ hit. โ€œIf You Think Youโ€™re Lonely Nowโ€ was famously covered by K-Ci and has been sampled many times.

15. Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, โ€œIf You Don’t Know Me By Nowโ€

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (Ft. Teddy Pendergrass) // Epic // 1972

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes [๐Ÿ“ท: Epic]โ€œAll the things / That weโ€™ve been through / You should understand me / Like I understand you.โ€ Sing it, Teddy Pendergrass (1950 โ€“ 2010)! The late soul singer brings his dynamic and expressive baritone to the high-flying Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes classic, โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Nowโ€.ย  โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Nowโ€ is the fourth track from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (Ft. Teddy Pendergrass), released in 1972.ย  It marks the soul collectiveโ€™s best-charting song on the pop charts. It peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.ย  Expectedly, on the R&B charts, โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Nowโ€ reached no. 1. Penned and produced by the iconic duo Gamble & Huff (Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff), โ€œKnowโ€ is one of the all-time classics in the soul catalog.

Pendergrassโ€™ โ€˜once-in-a-lifetimeโ€™ vocals play a huge role in the success of โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Now.โ€ย  He masterfully brings lyrics and melody to life.ย  The verses are terrific.ย  So is the varying pre-chorus, where first, Teddy sings, โ€œOh, donโ€™t get so excited / When I come home a little late at night / โ€˜Cause we only act like children / When we argue fuss and fight.โ€ Oh, snap! In the second pre-chorus, he makes a valid point: โ€œWhat good is a love affair / When we canโ€™t see eye to eye?โ€ The centerpiece is the chorus, which features sublime background vocals by The Blue Notes and top-notch ad-libs and vocal riffs from Pendergrass:

โ€œ(If you don’t know me by now)

If you don’t know me by now

(You will never, never, never know me)

You will never, never, never know me

(If you don’t know me by now)

If you don’t know me, baby

(You will never, never, never know me)

No, you won’t.โ€

Beyond songwriting and vocal performance, the musical accompaniment is stunning. This comes as no surprise with Gamble & Huff at the helm.ย  This is Philly soul at its finest.ย  The rhythm section! The dramatic, lush strings! The ambiance! โ€œIf You Donโ€™t Know Me By Nowโ€ is a masterpiece.
