13 Randomly Curated Your, Yours, or Yourself Songs features songs by Four Tops, Jobriath, Kid Souf, Landan Ash, Perfume Genius, and The Isley Brothers.
According to the gospel of Perfume Genius (and thatโs a sickening gospel ๐), โPut your back into it / There is still grace in this.โ Amen! Maybe itโs not amen in a holy sense, but โPut Your Back N2 Itโ is personal and epic.ย Years before the Genius of Perfume ๐, the short-lived but talented Jobriath asserted, โTake me Iโm yoursโ. ย Around the same time in the 1970s, The Staple Singers, led by Mavis Staples, encouraged us all to โRespect yourself, respect yourself / If you donโt respect yourself.โ ย Did you catch the three words that stand out in these three songs? They are your, yours, and yourself. The possessive adjective (your) and possessive pronouns (yours and yourself) fuel the fire on 13 Randomly Curated Your, Yours, or Yourself Songs, which features songs by Four Tops, Jobriath, Kid Souf, Landan Ash, Perfume Genius, and The Isley Brothers. What more needs to be said? Let us dive into these randomly curated your, yours, or yourself songs!

1. The Isley Brothers, โItโs Your Thingโ
Itโs Our Thing // Sony Music Entertainment // 1969
โItโs your thing, do what you wanna do / I canโt tell you who to sock it to.โ Woo! The Isley Brothers are among the greatest R&B groups ever โ #ICONIC.ย Their most successful song comes from the 1960s: โItโs Your Thingโ. โItโs Your Thingโ is the sixth track from their 1969 album, Itโs Our Thing. โThingโ was written by the late OโKelly Isley (1937 โ 1986), the late Rudolph Isley (1939 โ 2023), and the spirited lead singer extraordinaire, Ronald Isley (1941 โ ).ย โItโs Your Thingโ gave the legendary R&B collective its highest charting pop hit.ย It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.ย It was certified gold by the RIAA in 1969. Perhaps the biggest achievement of the song is winning the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Duo Or Group at the 12th Annual GRAMMY Awards.
The chorus, excerpted above, is the section to beat. It arrives after a super, funky groove is established at the onset. Ronald Isley shows off incredible musicianship on lead vocals. He showcases grit, a ripe falsetto, great abilities, and ample personality. โIf you want me to love you, maybe I will / Believe me woman, it ainโt no big deal,โ he sings in the first verse, continuing, โYou need love now, just as bad as I do / Makes me no difference now, who you give your thing to.โ Ooh-wee! Ron gets strong support from the background singers of The Isley Brothers. The lyrics are F-U-N. The music is scintillating โ marvelous accompaniment and production. The rhythm section is tight, particularly Ernie Isley (1952 โ ) on bass, while the articulated horns further accentuate the greatness.ย โItโs Your Thingโ is one of the funkiest, most fun songs youโll ever hear, PERIOD! Timeless!ย

2. Missy Elliott, โGet Ur Freak Onโ
Miss Eโฆ So Addictive // Elektra Entertainment Group, Inc. // 2001ย
โHeadbanger / Hit me /โฆ Give me some new shit!โ Woo! โGet Ur Freak Onโ is one of the premiere songs by four-time Grammy winner Missy Elliott. Fun fact: โGet Ur Freak Onโ earned Elliott her first Grammy at the 44th Annual GRAMMY Awards for Best Rap Solo Performance. Yay! Get it, girl! Oddly, it was also nominated for Best R&B Song ๐ฅด. Go figure! It is the fifth track from her platinum-certified third studio album, Miss Eโฆ So Addictive. โGet Ur Freak Onโ peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. It was certified multiplatinum by the RIAA in May 2023. Elliott and the one-and-only Timbaland produced this infectious rap banger (โMe and Timbaland been hot since twenty years agoโ).ย Both artists were โforward thinkersโ when it came to their music.
The production bangs. โGet Ur Freak Onโ sounded futuristic when released and remains ear-catching and innovative years later. The synth and percussion are on point. It samples four songs: โIs That Your Chick (The Lost Verses)โ by Memphis Bleek, โLarka 1.1โ by Zero-G and Master Dilbahar, โTomi Tablas 07โ and โClassic Tumbi Loop 03โ by Zero-G.ย Missy Elliott brings ample attitude, energy, and personality. Her rhymes are fun and incredibly sharp. โMissy be puttinโ it down, Iโm the hottest โround,โ she brags in the first verse, continuing, โI told yโall motherโ (Skrrt), yโall canโt stop me now / Listen to me now, Iโm lastinโ twenty rounds.โ Confident! โWhoโs that bitch? People you know,โ she bites in the second verse, adding, โPeople, here I come, now sweat me when Iโm done / We got the radio shook like we got a gun.โ Damn! The chorus is simple but utterly infectious: โ(Go) Get your freak on (go), get your freak on.โ Hell yeah! The change of pace during the third verse is cool. โ(Yes) I know you feel me now (Yes), I know you hear me loud / (Yes) I scream it loud and proud (Yes), Missy gonโ blow it down.โ A new synth arrives that doesnโt change the minimalist vibe but provides a welcome contrast that keeps โGet Ur Freak Onโ fresh. The ending is marvelous. โGet Ur Freak Onโ is one of the best โrapโ songs ever.ย That โnew shitโ is timeless!

3. Landan Ash, โLove In Your 20sโ
โLove In Your 20sโ // Landan Ash // 2024
โChase had too many ways to grow / And Nick couldnโt keep it in his pants.โ Oh, snap! โOh my god / Datingโs hard.โ Word! When describing his 2024 song, โLove In Your 20sโ, the handsome ๐ and talented Landan Ash (Landan Ash Boyde) asserts, โwrote a song about dating in your 20s.โ The honest, beautifully sung pop song was penned by Ash and producer Wesley Henry. The backdrop is celestial (groove, rhythmic guitar, bass, etc.) despite the hellish dating experiences Landan shares with us.ย Throw in the wrinkle that these experiences are queer โ ex-boyfriends โ and the song โslapsโ a little bit harder.
โOh my god
Is this where it really starts?
Oh my god
All the ways Iโm torn apart from dating
And I take it
And I hate it
What a shame to want love in your twenties.โ
Early in โLove In Your 20s,โ Landan shares Chase and Nickโs deal-breaking flaws โ immature and a man hoe. But, another ex-boyfriend confirms how difficult it is to date in your 20s: โMitch said everything was just fine / Two weeks went on heโs with a new guy.โ In the second verse, he makes general comments about the gay dating pool: โGrown-ass men will act just like boys / You get what you get, and you make no noise / My god / Dating sucks.โ โLove In Your 20sโ is a necessary addition to the bops playlist. We wish no boy pain on Landan, but, his boy pain is our listening pleasure in this case.

4. Obscurest Vinyl, โIโd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineโ
โIโd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineโ // Hallwood Distribution // 2024ย
Obscurest Vinyl is responsible for releasing โthe greatest records youโve never heard.โ Among those records is an โobscureโ one from the risquรฉ jazz crooner Vito Lovejoy.ย Youโre not alone if youโve never heard of him until he unleashed the โcharmingโ song, โIโd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineโ.ย The title not only contains innuendo, but also fecal matter โ shit! Before Lovejoy gets โdown and dirty,โ the listeners are privy to a refined instrumental intro. Beyond the old-school, big band backdrop, โIโd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineโ isnโt refined in the least.ย I mean, the title is on-the-nose to the nth degree.
Vito Lovejoy is brutally honest about his shitting problem. โI just canโt stop ruining all of these pants / Iโm just shittinโ and shittinโ and shittinโ.โ Damn, thatโs ample shit, bruh!ย Irritated regarding his irritable bowels, Lovejoy adds an intensifier to the shit: โTrying to get in your pants / Because I keep fuckinโ shittinโ in mine.โ What more can you say but, holy fuckinโ shit! โIโd Really Like To Get In Your Pants, Because I Just Shit Mineโ is all about shock value. Although itโs brief, running north of a minute, Vito Lovejoy and Obscurest Vinyl get their point across loud and clear.ย And that point involves lots of shit! In all seriousness, this โunrealโ record should be taken with a grain of salt. Itโs all for the sake of entertainment and thoroughly gets the job done.

5. The Staple Singers, Respect Yourself
Be Altitude: Respect Yourself // Concord Music Group Inc. // 1972
โIf you disrespect anybody / That you run into / How in the world do you think / Anybodyโs supposed to respect you?โ Itโs a legitimate question posed by Pop Staples (1914 โ 2000) and The Staple Singers.ย On โRespect Yourselfโ, the iconic, Rock and Roll / Gospel Music Hall of Famers speak to the importance of how to treat others with respect โ the way youโd want to be treated. Of course, this lack of respect highlighted in this funk/soul classic penned by Mack Rice and Luther Ingram has ties to inequality and racism (โTake the sheet off your face, boy / Itโs a brand-new dayโ). The Be Altitude: Respect Yourself highlight was a big hit, peaking at no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Al Bell produced โRespect Yourself,โ which is set in a minor key. Some of the instrumental highlights include bluesy electric piano riffs, a dynamic horn arrangement with epic riffs, and a fabulous groove anchored by the drums. With Pops taking the lead early, he is supported by the background vocals of Cleotha Staples (1934 โ 2013) and Yvonne Staples (1936 โ 2018). The vocal harmonies are sweet.ย Also sweet are the tuneful melodies that accompany the thought-provoking, wise lyrics.ย The chorus is the section to beat:
โRespect yourself, respect yourself
If you donโt respect yourself
Ainโt nobody gonna give a good cahoot, na, na, na
Respect yourself, respect yourself.โ
Pops cedes the lead to Mavis Staples (1939 โ ). She delivers incredibly powerful pipes in the second half of the song.ย Mavis gets political (โKeep talkinโ โbout the president / Wonโt stop air pollutionโ) and criticizes โuglyโ men with the help of the rest of the Staples (โOh, you cuss around women folk / And you donโt even know their names / And youโre dumb enough to think / Thatโll make you a big olโ manโ). Throughout โRespect Yourselfโ,ย The Staple Singers perform with incredible authenticity. Mavisโ ad-libs to close out the song are stellar. It is one of the โbest of the bestโ when it comes to soul classics.

6. Perfume Genius, โPut Your Back N2 Itโ
Put Your Back N 2 It // Perfume Genius / Matador // 2012
โPut your back into it / There is still grace in this.โ What is there still grace in Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas)? Intimacy and sexโฆ as a gay man. Hadreas keeps the lyrics minimal but meaningful on โPut Your Back N2 Itโ. โPut Your Back N2 Itโ is the 10th track from Perfume Geniusโ 2012 album, also titled Put Your Back N 2 It. Of the album, Christina Lee penned in an article in The Fanzine in 2012:
Put Your Back insists that thereโs grace in gay sex, and that his love, boiled down to its essence, is no different from anyone elseโs love.
Eloquently stated.ย The out-and-proud musician approaches this song therapeutically, asserting there should NOT be shame regarding sexuality. Heโs damn right.
The song title might be misleading. Without hearing the song or examining the lyrics, it suggests an aggressive sexual experience.ย Furthermore, when it comes to gay sex, it carries a negative connotation.ย Itโs considered dirty, filthy, unnatural, etc.ย Perfume Genius paints a much different picture with his radiant pipes and the undeniable authenticity and sincerity of his performance.ย In the second verse, Hadreas asserts, โThere is love with no hiding / Nothing you show me โย I will never leave you.โ Aww! The chorus, like the verses, is brief but potent: โLet me be the one to turn you on.โ The musical accompaniment shimmers, led by the synthesizer of his partner, Alan Wyffels.ย โPut Your Back N2 Itโ is one of the most refined and gorgeous songs about intimacy youโll ever hear. Homophobes be damned!

7. Kid Souf, โOn Your Faceโ
โOn Your Faceโ // Kid Souf // 2024ย
โI look like sex.โ Ooh-wee, Kid Souf! Thatโs surefire confidence ๐ฅต! โIf I lick it, then I own it,โ he sings, adding, โIf I kiss it, I control it / I been kissinโ on your body all night.โ Oh, snap! Kid Souf flaunts his sex appeal and sex-positivity on the bold, unapologetic single โOn Your Faceโ.ย Not only does it feature suggestive lyrics, but the cover art features Soufโs name written on his face with jizz ๐ฆ, as well as a music video with simulated sex (oral and anal) and blasphemy ๐! Thereโs no doubt about โOn Your Faceโ โ itโs all about pleasure, baby!
โI wanna touch on my own body โcause my bodyโs the goal.โ Damn, thatโs a strong statement there, Kid Souf! He makes numerous eyebrow-raising assertions. โSo, blow me while I blow this money right up my noseโ references a BJ and drug use ๐ณ.ย He doesnโt stop there, either! โGive you something good tonight / Light you up like camera lights / Down your throat until itโs numbโฆโ Size matters! If we are to believe what he implies, he is well-endowed ๐โฆ Further exploring the outlandish lyrics, Souf adds, โWannaย hear you scream / Wanna feel your body shake / Wanna hear you speak in tongues / I donโt wanna know your name / Just give me the word / And Iโll write it on your face.โ Letโs unpack that.ย He enjoys moaning, the โmotion of the bodyโ during sex, he doesnโt care about his partnerโs name, and will willingly ejaculate on his face.ย Holy fuck! โOn Your Faceโ is nothing short of a trip! Kid Souf brings ample attitude, the lyrics are infectious and suggestive, while the musical backdrop, with its dynamic, danceable synths and beat, goes hard.ย Itโs not explicit with curse words, but still, itโs not safe for work!

8. The S.O.S. Band, โTake Your Time (Do It Right)โ
S.O.S. // UMG Recordings, Inc. // 1980ย
โOo-ooh, baby / Letโs do it / Take your time / Letโs do it.โ R&B group The S.O.S. Band earned a platinum single with โTake Your Time (Do It Right)โ. I was the lead single and fifth track from their debut album, S.O.S. released in 1980. It marked the sole top 40 hit by the R&B collective. While The S.O.S. Band had other songs dent the pop charts, โTake Your Time (Do It Right),โ composed by Sigidi and Harold Clayton, was the song to beat, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.
There is lots to love about โTake Your Time (Do It Right).โ This eight-minute, post-disco, funk cut features an ear-catching sound palette.ย The rhythm section (keys, guitar, bass, and drums) and the horns are electrifying.ย The lead vocals by Mary Davis are also terrific.ย Davis brings us a commanding vocal performance thatโs quite expressive.ย Besides her fab lead, the background vocals (including Mary) enhance โTake Your Time.โ โLay your heavy load down / So we can stop and kick back,โ Davis encourages in the first verse, adding, โIt seems we never take the time to do / All the things we want to, yeah.โ Ooh-la-la! In the second verse, she adds, โLetโs take some time to be alone / Lock the door, put out the phone, yeah.โ Of course, the phone back then was a landlineโฆย The lyrics are fun, particularly the infectious, repetitive chorus:
โBaby, we can do it
Take the time, do it right
We can do it, baby
Do it tonight.โ
No extensive analysis is necessary for โTake Your Time (Do It Right)โ.ย The S.O.S. Band โput their foot intoโ this one.ย

9. Kevin Atwater, โwhy did you invite me to your weddingโ
โwhy did you invite me to your weddingโ // Kevin Atwater // 2023ย
โI got your message last night around 1:00 / Youโre getting married, and you want me to come.โ Kevin Atwater continues, โYou miss me a lot and the weddingโs next month / I think you were drunk, you spelled โweddingโ wrong / I used to break wishbones and pray that you liked me.โ Misspelling wedding is questionable. Still, the more telling lyric is the latter.ย In โwhy did you invite me to your weddingโ, there is a bond between Kevin (or his character) and this man who is now getting married. The bond seemed to transcend friendship, at least from Kevinโs perspective. Still, a 1:00 am text from a soon-to-be groom whom we presume is marrying a woman (he paints his crush as a jock)? Sounds gay, or at least, there was something thereโฆ
The point is that this reconnection has Kevin in his feelings.ย He penned a relatable song that captures the plight of gay romance. Did he crush on a โstraightโ guy, hoping there was a chance? That is the question. Atwater has feelings for someone who may or may not reciprocate those feelings in the way heโd hoped โ boyfriend and boyfriend.ย The second verse recalls an incident that speaks to the fact that maybe, the groom-to-be wasnโt so straightโฆ???
โโฆCaught in the moment
I kissed you and then you got quiet
You couldโve hurt me, it wouldโve been easy
โฆ But you took my hand and asked me to dance
To nothing and never brought it up again.โ
His friend is one of the nice boys โ marriage material. He also could beโฆ you knowโฆ In the final chorus, things are confused.ย Kevin has questions, notes how things have changed, and knows heโd mess things up for his friend/crush and bride-to-be. As much as โI wanna call you with a hand in my pants,โ rightfully, Atwater closes the chapter without closing it: โIโll never know why / Cause Iโll never reply / So you can just stay nice / In the back of my mind.โ Atwater drops an honest, thought-provoking gem with โwhy did you invite me to your weddingโ. Atwater sounds radiant, backed by warm, dreamy-sounding production (Hazey Eyes).

10. Jobriath, โTake Me Iโm Yoursโ
Jobriath // Elektra Entertainment Group Inc. // 1973ย
โAny day you could buy me or tie me up / A slave to your perversity.โ Say what, now?! โRefuse me diffuse me / To the corners of the galaxy.โ Oh, snap! Sadly, barrier-breaking, overlooked glam rock musician Jobriath (Bruce Wayne Campbell, 1946 โ 1983) died far too soon.ย Only 36 when he passed, the first openly gay rock musician to be signed to a major label and was also one of the first famous musicians to die from AIDS.ย Despite his short life, Campbellโs gifts as a musician are indisputable. โTake Me Iโm Yoursโ is the opening track from his self-titled 1973 debut album.
The first verse of โTake Me Iโm Yoursโ is ear-catching, namely the excerpted lyrics.ย The second verse doesnโt disappoint, either.ย โBaby, you just amaze me and daze me / Youโre the blind spot in my consciousness,โ Jobriath sings, continuing, โCโmon and forsake me and break me / And drink the blood of my obsessiveness.โ Ooh-wee! Most accessible is the chorus, which highlights the titular lyrics: โTake me Iโm yours.โย Still, Jobriath compels with the outro, where, โTake your torch and burn me and turn me over / And over in your dreams of Godliness.โ Wow ๐ฎ! โTake Me Iโm Yoursโ is incredibly alluring. Itโs not only the songwriting, though itโs โDEFINITELYโ a big deal.ย Jobriath possessed a distinct, expressive singing voice. He commands the track from start to finish. The musical arrangement and production are epic, with sweet-wailing guitars, robust bass, groovy drums, colorful keys, and marvelous backing vocals supporting Campbell.ย Honestly, Jobriath deserves far more recognition.ย This song rocks ๐ค!

11. Earth, Wind & Fire, โKeep Your Head to the Skyโ
Head To The Sky // Columbia // 1973ย
โKeep your head to the sky / So the clouds / Keep your head to the sky / So they can tell you why, Lord.โย Earth, Wind & Fire is one of the greatest, most iconic bands ever.ย The R&B/soul/funk collective have hits upon hits upon hits.ย One of their surefire classics is โKeep Your Head to the Skyโ the second track from their 1973 album, Head To The Sky. Surprisingly, โKeep Your Head to the Skyโ only achieved moderate pop success (no. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100). By chart performance alone, the song is underrated.ย It was written by the late, great Maurice White (1941 โ 2016) and produced by Joe Wissert.ย ย
To be fair, faith-based songs donโt perform as well on the mainstream charts. Faith is a key component of โKeep Your Head to the Skyโ where Earth, Wind & Fire arenโt shy to reference G-O-D.ย โAs I grew, and with strength / Master kept me as I repent,โ they sing in the first verse, with the Master being God.ย In the second, the pronouns are He and His, capitalized to represent the one and only: โHe gave me the will to be free / Purpose to live His reality.โ The songwriting is thoughtful.ย The falsetto by the high-flying Philip Bailey is angelic. Beyond Bailey, vocals are provided by Maurice White, Verdine White, and Jessica Cleaves. The closing vocals (harmonized) are chilling. Beyond the lyrics, themes, and vocals, the musical accompaniment is EVERYTHING โ a tight rhythm section including ample percussion and winds. The oft-sampled โKeep Your Head to the Skyโ is nothing short of sensational.

โโ12. Four Tops, โBaby, I Need Your Lovingโ
Four Tops // Motownโฏ// 1965ย
โBaby, I need your loving / Got to have all your loving.โ Agreed, universally, Four Tops! Levi Stubbs (1936 โ 2008), Abdul “Duke” Fakir (1935 โ 2024), Renaldo โObieโ Benson (1936 โ 2005), and Lawrence Payton, Sr. (1938 โ 1997) were the legendary lineup of one of the greatest vocal groups of all time.ย Among their greatest songs is their debut Motown single, โBaby, I Need Your Lovingโ, the opening track from Four Tops, released in 1965. Iconic songwriting trio Holland-Dozier-Holland โ Brian Holland (1941 โ ), Eddie Holland (1939 โ ), and Lamont Dozier (1941 โ 2022) โ penned this unforgettable Motown classic.ย Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier produced it. โBaby, I Need Your Lovingโ reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
ย ย
A killer drum riff commences โBaby, I Need Your Loving.โ Fabulous background vocals featured during the intro. The arrangement and production are sound โ the expectation from the Holland-Dozier tandem.ย The string orchestration stands out. Levi Stubbs โbrings the heatโ with his smooth, refined lead vocals.ย The chorus is the centerpiece โ the section to beat.ย Notably, it changes keys compared to the verse, which is ear-catching and cool.ย Although the chorus gets ample shine, the verses deserve recognition, too. After uttering the titular lyric in the first verse, Stubbs asserts, โAlthough you’re never near (I really need you) / Your voice I often hear (I really need you) / Another day, another night (I really need you) / I long to hold you tight (I really need you) / โCause Iโm so lonely.โ In the second verse, Stubbs doesnโt mind being considered weak by begging to attain her love. In the third and final verse, he informs her, โDarling, I canโt go on without you /โฆ This loneliness inside me, darling / Makes me feel half alive.โ Oh, snap! The thing that cures all ails is her love.ย โBaby, I Need Your Lovingโ is a 60-year-old song, yet it remains as magical and as potent as it was when it first arrived. Four Tops โput their footโ into this one!ย ย

13. Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, โEncourage Yourselfโ

โSometimes you have to encourage yourself / Sometimes you have to speak victory during the test.โ Life can be arduous and imperfect. Everybody faces tests โ trials and tribulations โ at some point.ย But when the going gets tough, the tough get going! Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers provide sound advice and supreme encouragement on the song,ย โEncourage Yourselfโ.ย โAnd no matter how you feel speak the word and you will be healed / Speak over yourself, encourage yourself in the Lord.โ Not only should you encourage yourself, but you should do so in the Lord.ย ย
โSometimes you have to speak a word over yourselfย
Depression is all around, but God is a present helpย
Well, the enemy created walls but remember giants they do fallย
Speak over yourself encourage yourself in the lord.โ
โEncourage Yourselfโ is the second track from Grand Finale, the 2007 album by Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers. Composed by Lawrence, The Tri-City Singers have spiritual text and tuneful melodies to bring to life. The lead vocals (Sheri Jones-Moffett) are electrifying โ authentic, commanding, and dynamic.ย Itโs not all lead, however. There are brilliant choral vocals that bring the encouragement out full throttle.ย Also contributing to the spiritually rich record is a celestial musical accompaniment.ย The band is tight: keys, warm organ, guitar licks, robust bass line, sound groove carried by drums, and articulated horns.ย Every facet of โEncourage Yourselfโ is encouraging! Speak it into existence and believe, โIโm encouraged, Iโm encouraged, Iโm encouraged, Iโm encouraged!โ ๐ Amen ๐!ย ย ย
