The 216-room Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown opened this week, the first of the brand in South Dakota. Built on the Big Sioux River in the heart of the Steel District, the property features two culinary outlets, a fitness center, nearly 20,000 square feet of event space and the brand’s signature Canopy bikes for exploring the city's 26-mile bike path.
“The opening of the Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown builds upon our expanding presence in the Midwest,” said Danny Hughes, president of the Americas for Hilton. “The hotel is situated in an incredible location and features dynamic design, beautiful local art and thoughtfully curated amenities that will ensure a memorable stay for our guests.”
The new hotel is within Falls Park, a 123-acre park in the center of the city, and it is next to Levitt Outdoor Amphitheater, which can host up to 4,000 people.
Thoughtful art and design
Offering views of Sioux Falls throughout the property, the hotel features a look created by Box Interior Design, integrating industrial and natural influences with metalwork alongside abstract local art to reflect the area’s heritage. The hotel's market features items from more than a dozen local vendors — from handcrafted goods to specialty bites and refreshments. In the lobby, a baby grand piano is home to performances by professional musicians and guests alike.
Much of the artwork in the property is sourced locally, including a mural by Native American artist Holly Young and an interactive pieces that is part of the Sioux Falls Sculpture Walk.
Guest rooms built with local flair
The property’s 216 guest rooms, including 16 corner rooms and six suites with balconies, feature nods to Sioux Steel, the area where the hotel sits. In the king rooms, yellow barrel drums serve as nightstands, and in-room artwork by Young is framed with the original ledger from the steel company that was founded in 1920 and is still operating. In fact, the barn door in each guest room was produced by Sioux Steel at a nearby plant.
Meeting and event spaces
The hotel's 16,000 square feet of indoor meeting space features 12 meeting rooms, including an 8,979-square-foot ballroom. For riverside events, there is an abundance of outdoor space, such as patios and the amphitheater.
Signature Italian restaurant on-site
The signature restaurant, Cascata Italian Cuisine, serves a menu of rustic and traditional Italian options paired with a curated wine menu. The three-meal-a-day eatery offers both indoor and al fresco dining.
Executive chef Chris Hodapp is sourcing from local farmers, breweries and roasters for his menus. Guests can start with Cascata’s Battilardo board featuring a selection of domestic and imported Italian meats and cheeses complemented by giardiniera, or opt for a shareable dish such as the fritto misto or carpaccio. The menu also features a selection of pastas and pizzas, hand-pressed raviolis and dry-aged steaks. For drinks, guests can sip on specialty cocktails including house-made limoncello, twists on classic cocktails or opt for a glass of wine from an extensive wine list. Guests can also sample local drinks during the Evening Tasting program featuring beverages from the local Glacial Lakes Distillery as well as The Spice & Tea Exchange.
For grab-and-go options, Torrent Coffee Bar offers specialty coffees and seasonal treats.
